What is Responsive web design

“One scalable website that is accessible and usable across every possible device and screen size.”

Responsive Web Design (RWD) is an approach of laying-out and coding a website such that the website provides an optimal viewing experience — ease of reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling — across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

I specialise in the design and construction of websites for small business, trades people, artists and the like. Working closely with clients from the start of the project until the finished solution.

Responsive web design is recommended by Google, it allows one website to provide a great user-experience across many devices and screen sizes, and it also makes managing your SEO strategy easier. As of April 21st 2015 Google began rewarding sites that were built responsively for multi-device support.

One of the best things about a responsive website is that this approach gives you the best chance to support newer devices and screens in the future. Responsive sites are fluid, scaling up or down as needed to best fit the screens being used to access the site. This means that as new devices hit the market with screen sizes unlike what we have seen before, our responsive websites will already be prepared to meet those new devices with a design and experience best suited to whatever screen sizes they throw at us.

And Also Smokeypo:

In 2000 I moved to Mullumbimby with my young family and, as I wanted to be a hands on father, I decided to start my own small one man operation under the moniker of "And Also Smokeypo" based in the Byron Shire, Northern New South Wales.

People often ask about the name 'And Also Smokeypo'. Maybe because I am based in Mullumbimby there always seems to be a slight nod and a wink to something illicit... No connection to that at all I assure you. The name came about through my children. My daughter loved the story of Pinocchio when she was very young; as a 3 year old she would ask me to read her smokeypo. The 'and also' part of the name comes via my son who, enthusiastic about life, would often start sentences with " and also dad" - 'this happened', 'I saw....', 'I did....' So there you go, put two phrases together and you have And Also Smokeypo.

I have been building websites for just on 20 years. I was very fortunate to be trained in the early days, learning the concepts of web design and coding, by Thomas Ashelford, who founded one of Australia’s first web design companies Ether.
Ether’s first claim to fame was the legendary Wood & Wire web site – an online music magazine, described by the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘Australia’s first popular web site’. (SMH, 8/7/2000). I was managing the content updates for Wood and Wire as well being part of the team developing the original ABC Online site - very exciting times indeed; there was no such thing as wysiwyg editor or a content management system - everything had to be hand coded. Designing bespoke websites has always been my passion; using Photoshop and hand coding; personalised websites for the likes of Paper Wings, Byron Bay Ballooning, Rubies and Robots, North Byron Parklands and many many more over the years. Unfortunately most of the original design's have been superseded by the more generic website look of today.... I do miss those creative days, when clients really wanted to stand out from the crowd and make a statement. But in saying that I am loving the challenges of mobile first design using the Bootstrap framework.
